Savannah Masker of Mays Landing is not your average sixth-grader. She has a passion for a special cause, and through that her independent community service project, “Christmas for Canines,” was born.

From Dec. 1 through Dec. 21 she will be collecting donations of pet food and pet supplies that will benefit the nonprofit organization, Atlantic County Canines of New Jersey.

When asked about her inspiration for “Christmas for Canines,” Masker said, “I wanted my service to benefit animals because I love them and I hope to be a veterinarian one day. Also, because Atlantic County Canines is a nonprofit local group that rescues local shelter dogs to find them forever homes. If not for that, they would be euthanized.

“This group relies only on donations to run and all of it goes to the dogs’ care and medical expenses. I believe in what they do and wanted to help.”

Donation bins will be at the following local businesses:

Riordan’s Canine Boutique and Grooming Salon in Mays Landing; Best Little Hair House in Jersey in Mays Landing; Diamond Furniture in Egg Harbor Township, and Paw Dazzle in Smithville.

Masker attends William Davies Middle School.
