Lifeguard races put local patrols to the test all summer long

The South Jersey beach lifeguard competition season is set to begin next week.

The South Jersey Chiefs Association, which indirectly oversees the competitions, will feature a whopping 36 official events jammed into the months of July and August.

Not every beach patrol will participate in all of the races, but you get the idea – there is plenty of opportunity for the lifeguards who protect us on the beach and in the ocean to showcase their skills.

Generally speaking, most of the competitions include the 15 South Jersey beach patrols from Brigantine south to Cape May Point, although there are a handful of races in which teams or individuals from Ocean County and beyond participate. There is also the return of the U.S. Lifesaving Association’s national championships, scheduled for Aug. 8-11 in Cape May, which will include some of the top athletes on beach patrols from all across the country. Cape May also hosted the national championships last summer.

For the patrols in Cape May County, it all starts next Friday, July 6, with the Cape May County Lifeguard Championships in Wildwood Crest.

Other popular competitions on the circuit include the Beschen-Callahan Memorial Races, held July 16 in memory of two former North Wildwood lifeguards killed in the Vietnam War; the Cape May SuperAthalon, a run-row-swim triathlon held July 16; the Atlantic City Classic, the first event of the season that features all 15 South Jersey Beach Patrols on July 20; the Ocean City Women’s Invitational, an all-female competition scheduled for July 25; the Dutch Hoffman Memorial Championships, which includes separate male and female competitions and is considered the first of the “Big Three” on July 27; the Margate World War II Memorials Aug. 3; the Cape Atlantic Women’s Invitational in Ventnor Aug. 8; the South Jersey Championships, considered the most important race of the summer, on Aug. 10 in Ocean City; and the Bud Tarbotton Memorial Around the Island Row, a close to 20-mile doubles row that circumnavigates the Wildwoods on Aug. 15.
