The fifth annual Sandy Paws 5K Run and 1-mile Pooch Walk in Stone Harbor steps off Sunday, Aug. 26 to benefit the Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire Company and the Animal Alliance of Cape May County.

The event, scheduled for the weekend before Labor Day, had to be canceled and rescheduled last year because of Hurricane Irene.

This year the fire company is celebrating its 100-year anniversary, and the runner who places 100th will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

The 5K starts 8 a.m., and the 1-mile Pooch Walk follows at 8:05.

The 5K race is timed and is for runners and walkers only; no dogs will be permitted. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place male and female finishers overall; to the first place male and female finisher in each age group (five-year increments); and to the first male and female finisher in the fire/EMS/police category. Results will be posted on 

The 1-mile Pooch Walk is for dogs and walkers and takes place on the beach. No dogs are permitted in the 5K run. Awards will be given to the first, second and third place best dressed pooch.

The registration fee is $20 for the 5K and $15 for the pooch walk in advance or

$25 for the 5K and $15 for the pooch walk the day of the race.

A T-shirt is guaranteed to the first 300 participants registered.

Preregistration and T-shirt pick up is 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Stone Harbor Fire Company, 96th Street and Second Avenue. Participants can also preregister online at  or register 6-7:45 a.m. the day of the race at the firehouse.
