A new theatrical collaboration between two arts facilities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania will come to Middle Township this summer in a venture called “Broadway at the Beach.”

Managing director Kay Aspell said the Performing Arts Center of Middle Township will host the Media Theatre for the Performing Arts, an award-winning professional theater group from Delaware County, Pa., for five nights to perform the musical comedy “Forever Plaid” July 18-22.

Media Theatre has gained national attention as a result of various musicals starring performers such as Emmy winner Wanda Sykes, “American Idol” runner-up Justin Guarini, and Tony nominees Philip Boykin and Ann Crumb.

“The Media Theatre’s ‘Broadway by the Beach’ allows us to create a second space in a location that is well-populated during the summer,” said Jesse Cline, Media’s artistic director. “The end result is that audiences in the area will become aware of the work we do in Media, and those who travel to the shore from Delaware County and the Main Line will have an opportunity to see professional music theater.”

PAC, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary later this year, set an attendance record of more than 50,000 last year. Its 1,000-seat theater has hosted performers as Peter Nero, Oprah Winfrey, Shirley Alston Reeves, Nipsey Russell and the Vienna Boys Choir.

“Forever Plaid” will bring back memories of the songs and the singing groups of the 1950s.

It is the often-funny story of four men in a singing group who fulfill their dreams by re-creating the music groups of that era and singing many of their songs.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. each night. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door and may be ordered by calling 609-463-1924 or 610-891-0100.
