Lots of the fun is free at Cape May County 4-H Fair

4-H fair entrance: The 4-H Fair Chicken Barbecue will be served 5-8 p.m. all three days of the fair. The annual Cape May County 4-H Fair will bring 4-H project displays, small animal and livestock shows and exhibits, live entertainment, horse shows, vendors, a pet show, amusement rides, games, food and demonstrations to the 4-H Fairgrounds in Cape May Court House Thursday through Saturday, July 19-21.

The fair runs noon-9 p.m. each day, and there is no admission fee. The shows, exhibits, parking in the official lot and transportation are also free.

The Wizard’s Festival of Fun Amusements will offer rides for the whole family 5-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1-10 p.m. Saturday. Saturday night is family night, offering unlimited rides 6-10 p.m. for $15.

The fair’s traditional barbecued chicken dinner will be served 5-8 p.m. all three evenings by the Cape May County Board of Agriculture. Friday’s menu adds a choice of filet of flounder or chicken. The price is $12.50 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under.

Barbecue tickets are available in advance at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension office, 355 Court House-South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House and during the fair at the barbecue ticket booth beginning at 4 p.m. each evening.

There will be live entertainment on the main stage throughout the fair. The Cantaffapella Rock ’n’ Roll Chorus will perform 7-9 p.m. Thursday, The John Walters Community Band will take the stage Thursday and Friday evening, and folksinger and songwriter Mary Roth will perform with an Appalachian Mountain dulcimer, guitar and Celtic bodhran on Friday evening. New this year is a steel drum performance by Bill Bittman, scheduled for Saturday night.

The official fair parking area is at the Cape May County Technical High School, off exit 11 on the east side of the Garden State Parkway, on Moore Road. Shuttle buses run every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. until the last car leaves the lot after closing. The buses are handicap accessible.

Limited premium parking is available for a $5 suggested donation in the Atlantic Cape Community College parking lot next door to the fairgrounds at 355 Court House-South Dennis Road.

Absolutely no pets are allowed on the fairgrounds except for the Saturday morning children’s pet show.

The 4-H Fair is the major fundraising effort of the 4-H Foundation Inc. It provides a showplace for the project work and accomplishments of the members of Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development program. The event is planned, managed and operated by volunteers, 4-H members, and their parents and friends and includes numerous agencies and organizations from throughout Cape May County.
