GALLOWAY – A 23-year-old local man was charged with possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and obstruction at 3:40 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, police said Sunday.

Zhavai Sheppard was reportedly arrested by Officers Gary Brenner and Dan Weigle as he was attempting to escape on foot near the intersection of Collins and Federal roads.

The officers were responding to a report of a man with a gun near the Shoppes of Galloway at Collins and Wrangleboro roads.

Brenner arrived first and saw Sheppard, who matched the description of the person reported.

When Brenner approached him, police said, Sheppard fled on foot toward Federal Court.

Brenner and Weigle pursued the suspect, and after a brief chase took him into custody.

Police said the officers found a loaded .40-caliber handgun in the stairway where Sheppard had fled.

The suspect was taken to the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility in Mays Landing in lieu of $150,000 cash bail.
