GALLOWAY – The Atlantic County Board of Freeholders unanimously passed a resolution May 21 supporting state legislation requiring that at least one member of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority be a resident of Atlantic, Cape May or Ocean County and requiring the Turnpike Authority to hold at least two regular meetings each year those counties.

“It is my understanding there is presently an opening on the Turnpike Authority,” said Freeholder Rich Dase, who sponsored the resolution.  Dase represents Galloway, Port Republic, Absecon and Brigantine.

“In light of this, it's imperative that we act now to support our South Jersey legislators in their effort to make sure our region is not only represented on the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, but also that our voices are heard regarding important issues to all Atlantic County drivers.

“The NJTA is based in North Jersey, which makes it convenient to ignore us.  We cannot let this continue to happen and this legislation goes a long to eliminate that convenience.”

The state Senate passed the bill requiring meetings in South Jersey Thursday, May 30.

Two full Garden State Parkway interchanges are to be constructed at exit 44 and the Atlantic City Service Area at Jimmie Leeds Road in Galloway Township.

“This will alleviate some traffic on Jimmie Leeds Road,” Dase said. “Both of these interchanges are long overdue and it's great that they are finally going to happen.  But what’s missing is a full interchange at exit 40 on the White Horse Pike. “

Dase said he plans to keep the pressure on to make the full interchange happen.

“Both of these bills can only help our chances of making this common sense interchange become a reality and ensuring that in the future local officials are consulted at the beginning of the planning process and on a regular basis, not just at limited participation meetings to discuss specific projects only.”
