Bicyclist dies after being struck by SUV

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – A Mays Landing man died Sunday, Feb. 26 when the bicycle he was riding collided with an SUV on the Black Horse Pike in the township’s Cardiff section.

Patrick Dutton, 19, of Mays Landing was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The accident occurred at 6:38 p.m. when a 2005 Ford Explorer operated by Steven Rando, 40, of the Bargaintown section of Egg Harbor Township, was traveling east on the Black Horse Pike.

After Rando passed east of Delilah Road, “he encountered a bicyclist in the roadway,” police said. Rando is an Atlantic City Police Department detective.

Police detoured traffic for 3½ hours to investigate the crash and clear the scene. Members of the Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company assisted.

Egg Harbor Township Officers Kevin Devlin, Robert Moran and Louis Poletis are investigating the incident with the assistance of the Atlantic County Prosecutors Office.
