On-duty Hamilton Township officer hurt in car crash

HAMILITON TOWNSHIP - An on-duty Hamilton Township police officer was injured Tuesday, May 29 when his patrol cruiser was rear-ended while he was stopped in
traffic.
Officer Gerhard Thorsen sustained minor injuries and was transported to AltantiCare Regional Medical Center in Galloway Township by township EMS personnel, Hamilton Township police said in a release issued by Sgt. Chris Robell.


The accident occurred at 7:25 a.m. when Thorsen was on patrol in a marked patrol unit on Route 40 near milepost 46 when he was stopped in traffic in the eastbound lane, police said. He was rear-ended by a pickup truck operated by Lewis J. Merryfield, 30, of Mullica Hill.
Merryfield was issued a motor vehicle summons for careless driving.
Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
