HAMILTON TOWNSHIP â€“ A Mays Landing man faces two charges after police say he built and left what appeared to be an improvised explosive device in the Woodlands Condominiums Complex.
John Carretta, 55, was charged with creating a false public alarm in the second degree and maintaining a public nuisance which is a disorderly personâ€™s offense, police said.
Police responded at 10:15 a.m. Monday, July 23 to a report of a suspicious device located on Rhododendron Court. Officers immediately evacuated nearby residents and secured the area as a precaution.
Members of the Atlantic City Bomb Squad, Atlantic County Hazmat, Atlantic County Prosecutors Office, Cologne and Laureldale fire companies as well as the Mays Landing Rescue Squad also responded.
Once the device was determined to be a fake, it was removed by Hamilton Township police.
An investigation led to Carrettaâ€™s arrest later in the afternoon.
