HAMILTON TOWNSHIP – A Mays Landing man was charged with assaulting two police officers after a shoplifting incident at a local Wawa.

Daniel J. Palmer, 32, was arrested just after 8 a.m. Sunday, July 22 and was transferred to AtlantiCare Medical Center for medical treatment after he assaulted two police officers inside the Hamilton Township police station.

Officer Jeremy Hartman was sent to the hospital for treatment of a minor injury, police said. Fellow Officer Mark Perna declined hospital treatment.

Palmer was charged with aggravated assault on police, resisting and eluding arrest and shoplifting. He was jailed in the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility in Mays Landing on $17,500 cash bail.

Police said Palmer was inside the Wawa, located at 5201 Harding Highway, when employees said he began “displaying abnormal behavior.”

Employees recognized Palmer as being the subject of previous shoplifting incidents inside the store. However, Palmer was able to avoid arrest in those incidents, police said.

Palmer’s freedom this time was short-lived.

Officers were able to quickly locate Palmer in the nearby Sandpiper Apartments parking lot.

Police said Palmer disobeyed officers’ orders to stop and fled the scene on a bicycle.

However, Hamilton Township K-9 dog, Kota, tracked down Palmer. Palmer surrendered to Kota and was taken into custody without incident.

At the police station, Palmer became combative and assault the officers, police said.
