HAMILTON TOWNSHIP – Some families with big hearts will find they have happier homes after opening them to animals from PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend Friday-Sunday, Sept. 14-16.

According to Amanda Casazza, program manager for Alley Cat Allies’ Atlantic City community programs and support, Five cats, two rabbits and one dog were adopted from the Mays Landing PetSmart.

“And a second dog is probably going to be adopted,” Casazza said.

Some of the cats available over the weekend were from a trap, neuter and return project at Aloe Village Apartments in Egg Harbor City.

“We’re naming the cats for baseball players,” Casazza said. “These two are Nolan and Ryan. Others include Cole Hamels, Schmidt – for Mike Schmidt – Mickey Mantle and Ruth – for Babe Ruth.”

The rabbits and dogs were from other pet adoption groups, she said.

Still available from Furry Angels Rescue in Hammonton is Suki, a 4-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix. Described as very calm, the pooch can be seen by making arrangements through This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Casazza said it was a busy weekend with Alley Cat Allies signing up four new volunteers as well.

Adoption Center hours at PetSmart are 6-9 p.m. Mondays-Fridays; 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Saturdays; and noon-4 p.m. Sundays.

“We take donations,” said Casazza, who lives in Egg Harbor Township. “There’s a bin outside where people can leave blankets, towels, toys, food and litter. People donate many things.”

Donations of money can be made through the website, www.alleycat.org.
