Hess School goes into lockdown following suspicious person report

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP – The George Hess Elementary School went into lockdown on Friday morning, Dec. 21 following the report of a suspicious person.

Township of Hamilton Police Department responded to 700 Babcock Road for a report of a suspicious person with a possible weapon at 9:26 a.m. Friday, according to a press release from Detective Frank Schalek of the Township of Hamilton Police Department.

"Based on the report, officers and the school implemented its emergency response plan immediately and placed the school on lockdown," the release states.

Officers and school personnel searched the building surrounding outdoor areas thoroughly following procedures to ensure there was no danger to the students and staff. The school was deemed safe at 11 a.m. by the administrator and the Township of Hamilton Police Department, and the school returned to normal routine.

The Atlantic County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.
