HAMILTON TOWNSHIP – Three juveniles were arrested Saturday, Jan. 12 after a number of fires were set in trashcans and a large metal dumping bin at Underhill Park and the Duberson School, police said.

Police responded 11:20 a.m. Saturday to a fire at the Underhill Park athletic fields in Mays Landing. When they arrived it was determined that two trash cans had been set on fire close to the field house. They were extinguished without damage to the building.

Shortly thereafter, another fire was discovered burning on the front steps of the former Duberson Middle School on Farragut Avenue. It appeared that someone had placed a trashcan full of leaves on the main steps and set it on fire, police said.

While police were at the the Duberson School, three people were observed running from the scene. A third fire to a large dumping bin at Duberson was also discovered.

The fires were extinguished before spreading outside of the containers.

Two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old, all from Mays Landing, were arrested and charged with arson and criminal mischief. They were released to their parents.

Mays Landing Fire Department assisted at the scene.
