HAMILTON TOWNSHIP – A township police officer shot and killed a dog that attacked him Sunday, Jan. 13 after it had bitten a woman who was trying to protect her 7-year-old niece.

It was about 4 p.m. when township police responded to a report of two aggressive dogs running loose in the Harding Lakes section of township.

Officer Craig Clayton responded and saw two large Rottweilers entering a playground at the corner of Rose Boulevard and Cove Avenue that was occupied by an adult and three children.

Police said one of the dogs went after a 7-year-old girl and subsequently bit the arm of the girl’s aunt, who was trying to keep the dog away from the child.

Clayton and the woman were able to get the children onto an elevated piece of playground equipment as the dog circled around and attacked the officer.

Clayton drew his weapon and fired three shots, which struck and killed the dog. The second dog ran away.

The woman was treated for minor injuries at AtlantiCareRegionalMedicalCenter in Galloway. None of the children were injured.

Animal control responded to the scene and removed the dog.

Charges against the owner of the dogs are pending further investigation.
