Two young singers wowed Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School district board members with solo performances during the group’s Monday, May 20 school board meeting at Oakcrest High School in Hamilton Township.

Both got standing ovations after demonstrating what products of the school’s music program can accomplish.

“Essence Pitman is currently a junior at OHS and represented our chapters of Upsilon Alpha and Psi Lamda at the 66th District Conference Talent Hunt Competition held in Buffalo, N.Y., on May 4,” said Susan Foreman, supervisor of social studies, performing arts and English language learners. “She placed third in the contemporary vocal category and competed against students from New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York. Essence also had the honor of earning All South Jersey Choir.”

Thomas Smith is an Oakcrest sophomore who earned All South Jersey and All State honors.

“What an accomplishment!” Foreman said. “They are extremely talented individuals that have a passion for music. We are blessed.”

Pittman, daughter of Angela Pittman, has performed at the Apollo Theater in New York twice and has also performed twice at the Special Services District Prom.

She said she learned singing from her mom, who said that her daughter actually started singing in church.

“She would stand up in church and sing at the age of 2,” Angela Pittman said.

Smith, son of Pat Smith, said he’s never had singing lessons.

“I started with choir at Hess in fourth grade,” he said. “I’m also in drama.”

Smith’s mom said he is also a Life Scout – just a few merit badges shy of attaining the rank of Eagle.
