U.S. Reps. Frank A. LoBiondo (R-2nd) and Frank Pallone (D-6th) released a joint statement today (Tuesday, Sept. 17) expressing their disappointment in the Third Circuit Court’s upholding of a District Court ruling barring New Jersey from allowing sports wagering in the state.
“The decision from the Third Circuit is extremely disappointing and one that we do not support. Fortunately, there remain opportunities for appeal, which may still allow New Jersey to move forward with sports wagering. We fully support the state of New Jersey appealing the decision and seeking further review by the Third Circuit or U.S. Supreme Court.
“Furthermore, the Third Circuit’s decision reinforces our calls for federal legislation to allow the state of New Jersey to implement its sports wagering law and authorize legalized sports wagering,” they continued. “The people of New Jersey clearly support it. It will help to stem the criminal activity associated with sports gambling and will bring in needed revenue by taking sports gambling out of the shadows and regulating it.”
The congressmen said they are committed to continuing their push to pass legislation that would bring legal sports wagering to New Jersey.
A three-judge panel split 2-1 in the decision, and a dissent by Judge Vanaskie argued in favor of the state of New Jersey.
