The program is not insurance. Anyone may join, and there are no age or income restrictions, according to a news release from the county. Under the program, members and everyone in their household can receive a discount of up to 50 percent on teeth cleanings, X-rays, braces, dentures, crowns, root canals and other dental services.
Members simply schedule an appointment with a participating dentist or specialist and present the membership card to receive a discount at the time of service.
Members can choose from more than 400 local and 75,000 national participating service providers.
Membership starts at $6.95 per month, or $59 annually, for individuals and $8.95 per month, or $69 annually, for families. In addition to assisting uninsured residents, the program can be used to complement existing health insurance plans and works in conjunction with health savings accounts, flexible spending accounts and health reimbursement arrangements. It is also a cost-effective way for younger retirees to meet their dental needs, according to the news release.
Good dental hygiene habits developed at an early age can help promote overall health and wellness, the county said in the news release, and research has linked gum disease to heightened risk of diabetes, heart attack and stroke. Poor dental health has also been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, and in pregnant women affected, it can result in premature birth and low birth weight.
