LINWOOD – In a tribute to local veterans, Mainland Wellness and Rehabilitation Center is offering a program dubbed “Healing Hands 4 Heroes” that allows veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq to receive 60 days of free chiropractic treatments.
Dr. Patrick Arnold, the owner of Mainland Wellness and Rehabilitation Center, said the program is a partnership with Army OneSource – a U.S. Army community outreach program – and the Army Community Covenant. The goal is to raise awareness of the unique challenges facing service members and to address the growing need for accessible health services while helping to provide those services.
“This is a program that we are very excited and very proud to be involved in,” said Arnold, who has been a practicing chiropractor in Linwood since 1990.The new program at Mainland Wellness and Rehabilitation is part of a statewide effort to help veterans through the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors. In addition to having select New Jersey chiropractors offer free treatment, the ANJC also offers educational programs to chiropractors to allow them to learn about the stresses that service members face as a result of multiple deployments.
Dr. Matthew Corbo, a 2001 graduate of Mainland Regional High School who joined Mainland Wellness and Rehabilitation Center in 2009, said veterans who make appointments will receive comprehensive examinations followed by any treatments deemed necessary. He said chiropractic care is essential for veterans, and he is excited to be able to provide it for free through “Healing Hands 4 Heroes.”
“A lot of the stuff they do, whether it’s fighting in a war or just training, that puts a lot of stress on the body,” Corbo said. “It takes its toll. It’s a lot of physical stress to put on your body and joints and muscles.”
While chiropractic care is a good idea for anyone, it is especially crucial for veterans who may be suffering from the wear-and-tear of a military career.
“It’s important to have appropriate treatment to give bodies a chance to heal properly,” said Corbo.
Even if a veteran isn’t suffering from a particular pain or injury, the program is still available to them.
“Our office does a lot of wellness care,” Corbo said. “It’s not just about chiropractic or spinal manipulations; it’s about treating the whole body and preventing more injuries from happening.”
Only a handful of veterans in the area have heard of the program, Corbo said, so participation has been low so far, but he is hoping Mainland Wellness and Rehabilitation will have an opportunity to help even more veterans over the coming months.
“It’s really important for us to give back to the people that serve,” Corbo said. “They’re protecting us, so it’s good to say thanks and give them the appropriate care.”
