Police said in a news release that the patron, whose named was not provided, walked into the convenience store and saw the owner and an employee struggling with a man on the floor.
The customer called 911 and stayed on the line with the dispatcher until help arrived.
Northfield Police Officer Geoff Bentz was first on the scene. According to police, the violent struggle going on just inside the store was a robbery in progress.
Ashite Taffara Watkins, 21, of Pleasantville was arrested and charged with robbery, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, shoplifting, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, namely marijuana under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession with the intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance, disorderly conduct and possession of other weapons.
Judge Howard Freed sent bail at $100, 000. Watkins was transported to the
Bentz took Watkins into custody without further incident, police said, with Sgt. Paul Newman assisting.
Watkins suffered an unspecified injury to his head during the incident, according to reports.
The store closed briefly during the arrest and an investigation by Detective Sgt. Steve Steinecke and Detective William Ward.
Watkins was taken to the Northfield Police Station after the arrest.
