Operators spent Friday afternoon, May 18 digging out roughly 10 feet of dirt and fill that was at the base of the 60-foot-high Jersey Outdoor Media electronic billboard located on Hackney’s Marina along the Margate Causeway. The level of dirt fill removed takes the area around the base down to the level of surrounding the marshland.
Dr. Richard Levitt of Northfield is taking legal action to get the sign removed. Stephen Hankin, attorney for Levitt said Friday, “Whatever they are doing is an obvious reaction to documents filed that the sign is on wetlands. There was no court order to remove that fill and no DEP permit issued for the work.
“In my legal opinion, if they are excavating that site and removing anything on that site then a DEP permit is required.”
Nearby Northfield City Council and Margate City Commission have officially come out in opposition to the sign.
