LINWOOD—Ryan Slusarczyk would love to have the chance to slide on the back of a motorcycle and take a ride. But he will not have that chance. Ryan, who is 23 and originally from Wildwood is now a resident at the Linwood Care Center. Born with spina bifida, Ryan has spent his whole life confined to a wheel chair.

But while he might not be able to take that ride, others are rolling in to make that trip for him next Saturday, July 27 on the first ever Ryan’s Run.

It is a 70-mile poker run that organizer John Pabst said is a scenic route through Atlantic County that will take riders on the roads less traveled. "Its a great day to enjoy a ride with friends," said the organizer.

Pabst explained that the “poker” in the poker run makes for an extra fun part of the ride. When bikers sign up and register at Linwood Care Center they will pick a card from a deck and then do the same at each of the four stops along the way. When they arrive at the last stop the rider with the best poker hand will win a cash prize. There will also be a Chinese auction and great food and drink specials, according to Pabst.

“We wanted to be able to something for Ryan and with some help from riders around the county we hope to make his dream to go to Disney World become a reality,” said Pabst. “He has been medically cleared to make the trip.”

According to Anne Nachtigall of Linwood Care Center a series of medical problems has Ryan on a ventilator and he recently lost his eye sight. “He is such a great kid and he has such a supportive family. It would be a wonderful thing if we could do something special for this very special person.”

The cost to join the poker run is $20 for rider and $15 for passengers. There will be T-shirts for the first 50 people to register To pre-register for Ryan’s Run or to learn more about the event call John at (609) 204-6382.

The race will begin at Linwood Care Center, 201 New Road in Linwood, at the corner of New Road and Central Avenue. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 27 and the poker run rolls out of Linwood and through the county starting at noon.

The rain date is Sunday, July 28.
