SOMERS POINT – A baby boy born to Brandi and Mitchell Onorato of Brigantine at 6:47 a.m. Jan. 1 was the first baby of the New Year at Shore Medical Center.

The baby, named Russell Stephen Onorato, is the couple’s first child.

The Onoratos arrived at Shore after Brandi, 25, went into labor after midnight – more than a week ahead of her Jan. 10 due date, according to a hospital news release.

“I think we had an idea he was going to come early, but we were still surprised,” Onorato said.

Originally from San Diego, the Onoratos were high school sweethearts. They moved to the area when Mitchell, an avionics electrical technician 2nd class in the U.S. Coast Guard, was transferred to Air Station Atlantic City at the William J. Hughes FAA Technical Center in Egg Harbor Township.

“It’s exciting, and I’m nervous but also very happy,” Mitchell Onorato said. “It’s hard to put into words, but this is just the perfect way to ring in the New Year.”
