Bill Hughes, of Northfield, candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s second congressional district, announced Monday that he has earned a spot in the first round of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s (DCCC) Red to Blue Program as an emerging race. His is one of only 28 nationwide to earn this distinction.

“I am honored by the outpouring of support we’ve had in New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District, as South Jersey residents have joined our grassroots campaign to stand up for middle class families and build an economy that works for everyone,” said Hughes. “The early strength our campaign has demonstrated led us to earn a spot as an emerging race in the Red to Blue program, and it means we have the support, confidence, and momentum it takes to win in November, and bring commonsense solutions to Washington.”

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel said, “Bill Hughes will work tirelessly to get South Jersey’s economy moving again and will fight to end the reckless brinksmanship and partisan politics that continue to stifle local job growth. Bill has strong potential in this race because he is a problem solver who will work together to help South Jersey small businesses grow and hire new workers.  He puts South Jersey families first and will stand up to the Washington special interests that continue to hurt the local economy.”

The DCCC’s Red to Blue program highlights Democratic campaigns across the country, and offers them financial, communications, grassroots, and strategic support. The program will introduce Democratic supporters to new, competitive candidates in order to help expand the fundraising base for these campaigns. The emerging race distinction highlights candidates and districts that are making themselves competitive by running smart campaigns.
This designation is a first for a congressional candidate in New Jersey’s second district.
