LINWOOD--The Mainland Regional High School Key Club wanted to do a fundraiser to support their activities and rather than bake sale or a car wash they settled on an open mic night in the library. More than 30 students turned out.  Club advisor XXX said the officers of the club pulled it altogether and they were very pleased with how well the evening went.  There are about 140 members to the MRHS chapter of the Key Club.

Some where there to perform while others were there for moral support or just to enjoy the talent.  Students sang, played instruments and even tried a comedy routine.  Advanced art students chose a piece from their portfolio to display around the library, Jennifer Strenger  recited an original poem, Spanish teacher Danielle Ballard told a story in Spanish.  The response from students at the March 6 open mic night; a big hit.

You
An original poem by Jennifer Strenger
You
him, I am awestruck
as he lights up the room, some kind of sunlight superhero savior, proudly
her, I am laughing
as she takes the stage and my attention, runs with it as she runs her mouth,
smiling
but you-
blue button down, down to your converse shoes-
you-
voice like a radioman, 1950's swagger in your step, confident-
you-
I could follow a trail of breadcrumbs down your throat, down a rabbit hole,
go ask Alice on the other side and still not get tired-
you-
I want to grab your hands as they grasp at air, pull you from your pedestal,
bring you down, like a burning building, down to my level-
you-
innocence painted on your face, mischief inked within your eyes, scandal
stained across your lips
you-
back straight, chin up, a regular animatronic Prince Charming-
you-
whispering in my ear so-called truths, over-dramatic part-promises never
meant for keeping-
you-
you, I loved
