VENTNOR- Local fathers combined their love for surfing with their love of special needs individuals with Heart of Surfing surf camp.

Bob Fertsch and Vinnie Lorenzi of Egg Harbor Township have brought opportunity to the beaches of Ventnor with the Heart of Surfing camp, a non-profit organization that strives to give individuals with special needs the opportunity to learn to surf.

Every Saturday on Newport Ave. Beach, you’ll find eight students experiencing one on one surfing lessons. Fertsch and Lorenzi, who each Father an autistic child, have been giving lessons each week from three to five since June 21 of this year.

“It’s really all about the experience these students receive,” said Bob’s wife, Cindy Fertsch, “They get to spend some time in the water. They get on the board, and they really feel included.”

Bob and Cindy Fertsch are also a part of Faces 4 Autism, a local autism support group that has recently partnered up with Heart of Surfing.

“We’re really excited to be partnered with Faces,” said Cindy Fertsch, “They’re really giving us the opportunity to start to get our message out there.”

Right now, Heart of Surfing schedules eight different students each week, giving more individuals an opportunity to participate. With two instructors, working in 30 minute sessions, the organization is very interested in gaining volunteers.

“We really hope to continue to expand,” said Cindy Fertsch, “We hope to be able to get more and more kids in the water; we definitely want to continue this program in the summers to come.”
