Northfield All Stars bring home the District 16 softball title with a 5-4 ten inning victory over Tri-Boro. NORTHFIELD—The sirens wailed as the police and fire department led the way down Tilton Road Monday night for the 13/14 year-old Northfield All Stars softball team parade celebrating their 5-4 win over the Tri-Boro team to take the state title.

It took 10 innings to get the job done as they squared off against the District 2 champion Tri-Boro team from Northeast New Jersey in Mantua. Northfield earned their way to the tournament winning the District 16 title last week.

The Northfield girls jumped out to an early lead when Meredith Miller hit a three-run bomb in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Tri-Boro tied it up in the fourth and took the lead in the top of the tenth.

Tri-Boro tried to take the wind out of Northfield’s sails but the girls still had some tricks up their sleeves and hot bats in their hands.
Manager Mike Toner said that Lauren Toner reached base on a Tri-Boro error and a passed ball got her to second base. Toner scored on a timely hit by Meredith Miller and the game was knotted at 4.

Gabriella Monzo got a hit and Northfield had runners on first and second. The Tri-Boro pitcher got the next two batters out. Olivia Goff came to the plate and delivered the biggest hit of her softball career; a two-out single that brought Monzo home to take the game 5-4.

Toner said the excitement erupted around home plate. “Olivia really delivered when we needed her, it was a great hit,” said Toner.
The girls on the team are from Northfield, Linwood and Somers Point. According to the coach, eight of them played on the 11/12 year-old Northfield All Stars that played for a state title and came up a little short. They erased that with a big win to claim the New Jersey District 16 State title.

The players enjoyed their parade through the towns and then headed back to Birch Grove Park but their softball journey is far from done. Friday they will head up the turnpike to West Haven, Connecticut to play for the Eastern Regional crown. The tournament begins Saturday. They will be up against nine other tough teams all looking to make a run at the title, but Northfield team will let you know; they have what it takes to go into extra innings and still get the job done.

The players are; pitcher Gillian McCarthy, right fielder Lauren Toner, left fielder Jessie Higbee,  first baseman Meredith Miller at third is Mary McLaughlin, center fielder McKenzie Brennan, on second base is Olivia Goff, Gillian McCarthy is the pitcher, right fielder Madison DiSidori, left fielder Lauren Vandenberg, short stop Shauna Bennett and Gabriella Monzo is the catcher.

Eight of the players will be freshmen at Mainland Regional High School in September.
