NORTHFIELD--The city might not exactly be the place where camera crews head to shoot commercials for the NHL but Wednesday morning that is exactly who was in town and DGA  Productions based in Massachusetts was in and the cameras were rolling.

A pick-up game of street hockey with the kids on Joseph Court, just across the street from Birch Grove Park had a real surprise Wednesday, July 30. A van emblazoned with the Bauer logo across the side, (popular manufacturer of hockey equipment) pulled down the street and out stepped Steven Stamkos, center for the Tampa Bay Lightening.

The street hockey game was in front of the Wimberg’s home and according to Christie Wimberg, Stamkos, dressed in his Lightening jersey asked the kids if he could play some hockey with them. So of course all these aspiring hockey players were thrilled to let the NHL star shoot it out with them for a while.

The gist of the commercials shot in Northfield last week is NHL players cross training in other sports. One of the first places Stamkos headed was to the Tilton Driving Range, which according to Northfield City Clerk Mary Canesi is the only golf driving range in South Jersey that is not affiliated with a golf course. Stamkos was using his hockey stick like a Big Bertha driver and teeing off hockey pucks as if they were Titlist balls and sending them sailing over the greens at 50 and 75 yards like it was nothing while the cameras rolling.

After playing some hockey with the Northfield kids the cameras were again rolling and some actors stepped in and played the street hockey game with Stamkos while the cameras documented every angle and the Northfield kids got to watch the filming, get autographs and have fun.

The crew along with Stamkos headed to the football field that had just been freshly lined (Bauer paid for the cost of lining the field) for the filming of the commercial where Stamkos would shoot pucks through the goal posts using his hockey stick. He began shooting at the 35 yard line and kept moving back and kept nailing them right down the center until he hit 90 yards out; that proved to be just a little out of his range. The commercial will feature him hitting it through the uprights at 85 yards.

Seven-year old Luca Canesi had a chance to be a would-be commercial producer for the morning, wearing the headphones and peeking into the camera to take a look at the progress of the shoot and sharing an occasional fist bump with the guys on the field. A dozen or so kids had a chance to watch all the filming from the sidelines, take pictures and get autographs from their now favorite NHL star.

Stamkos, 24, plays center and is the captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was the first overall pick of the 2006 Ontario Hockey League and is a member of the Canadian National Men’s Hockey Team.

No date on when the commercial shot in Northfield might air.
