Marc Cohen of Philadelphia and Linwood brought the concept of a total wellness center to the region more than a year ago and vowed at the time to transform the former Mainland Fitness into a facility where health care and wellness would create a synergy that could help every person reach his or her potential.

Cohen said what sets AC Best Docs apart is its mantra that nobody takes responsibility for the patient because everyone takes responsibility for the patient. Here, they have partnered physical therapy, chiropractic, pain management doctors and primary care physicians with a fitness center. The goal is to get people back to their normal life as quickly as possible.

After months of work and renovations, the 20,000-square-foot facility has opened its doors. Although the official grand opening is not until April, AC Best Docs is up and running.

Cohen said the center has brought together primary care physicians from AtlantiCare, certified physical therapists, pain management doctors, exercise physiologists and nurses under one roof to help patients who are working their way back from an injury or from surgery reach their goals.

AC Best Docs is working with the United Auto Workers Union to help members stay healthy, he said. Cohen explained that the best way to keep insurance claims lower and to have a happy workforce is to help build a healthy workforce. If a worker is injured, AC Best Docs has personnel that can assess the injury, plan rehabilitation and get the person back to where they were before the injury all in one facility, and to do it without the need for pain medication.

Physical therapist John McGrail works with patients in the rehab center using traditional manual methods, electrical stimulation and ultrasound, along with cutting-edge equipment that uses heat or cold to affect a larger area with a handheld electronic tool. He is also trained in the use of lasers to treat injuries and speed up wound care.

The facility boasts an ozone-filtered hydropool to help restore motion. It is equipped with two treadmills and jets to provide resistance. Cohen said rehabilitation for a knee or hip using an underwater treadmill is faster and less painful than a regular treadmill.

“The difference it makes to the patient’s recovery time and their overall well-being is amazing,” he said.

The hydropool use is customized for each patient, he said. Different depths help the patient go from bearing no weight on the joints to increased amounts of weight and resistance as they progress through therapy.

AC Best Docs also works with patients to help restore balance.

The Techno Gym equipment is different than that found in a traditional gym, Cohen said, and allows the user to work on muscle and core fitness.

Former Mainland Regional High School football standout Ron Moody is an exercise physiologist who works with patients to optimize core stabilization and help them get the most from their workout.

Moody demonstrated the center’s jump drive component. Each person uses a jump drive to sign in. Information about what they did on recent visits, as well as workouts they may have done at home is stored on the jump drive.

“They can enter information from their mobile device as far as their workouts and other information so each person is able to monitor their fitness,” Cohen said.

He noted that the user can provide medical information such as cholesterol, heart rate, BMI, etc., and track it.

“Users can look at their numbers, see what their workout has been and then have the numbers checked again to compare and see the direct effect their workout has on their numbers,” he said.
