OCEAN CITY — On the fourth anniversary of the opening of his downtown cafe Nov. 1, Yianni Signanos planned to celebrate, but Hurricane Sandy rained on his parade.

Slamming the New Jersey coast just days before, Sandy flooded Asbury Avenue, dumping more than a foot of water inside Yianni’s Café. So instead of celebrating a milestone, Signanos began the arduous task of starting over; tearing his eatery apart and building it back.

OCEAN CITY — With devastating pictures of the hurricane-ravaged Jersey Shore still circulating, Ocean City tourism officials invited media representatives from across the Delaware Valley to the famed Ocean City Boardwalk on Monday to showcase that Ocean City is “recovered, restored and ready for your visit.”

America’s Greatest Family Resort is “open for business” said Michele Gillian, executive director of the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce.

The Sneaker Shop is up and running

OCEAN CITY —The colorfully decorated front window of the recently reopened The Sneaker Shop features two runners on the boardwalk, with replicated boards and railings. An accompanying sign heralds the good news: “We are up and running!”

In early October, “Sneaker Girls” Janet Schlitz and Maureen Kelly celebrated their 10th anniversary in business. A few weeks later, Hurricane Sandy dumped a couple feet of water in the store at 846 Asbury Ave., setting them back not quite a decade, but pretty darn close.
