Get fit, meet people at Local Gym

OCEAN CITY — When The Islander gym on Eighth Street closed two years ago, Patrick Carr and friends Mark Impagliazzo of Ocean City, Fritz Hastings of Linwood and Russell Snow of Beesleys Point felt there was something missing in the community.

Hastings and Impagliazzo were the former owners of The Islander, where Carr was a regular.

“We felt there was such a need for the community for a gym,” Carr said. “We know it’s more than a gym.”

He said it’s not only a place to work out and feel good, but it’s also a meeting place.

So in March, the group began working on Ocean City Local Gym and Fitness at 908 Asbury Ave. The gym was complete by the fall and doors opened Oct. 1.

The gym features a cardio area, light weight area, heavy iron area and a stretching area. A large garage door opens up onto the avenue when weather permits.

Local Gym and Fitness offers personal training with Hastings, Impagliazzo and Nancy Leary. Hastings is the head trainer with more than 40 years experience. Carr explained that Leary does TRX training upstairs in the loft.

“There’s a class every Wednesday night,” he said. “It’s rubber bands, using your own body weight.”

Classes are $10 for both members and non-members.

Students receive a discount at Local Gym and Fitness with an opening rate special of $40 for one month and $99 for three months. The gym is open 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

Holiday gift baskets are available and include a one month membership, one personal training session, one TRX class and a T-shirt, a $150 value.
