Christie keeps pushing hard for pipeline

To the editor:

In a show of single-mindedness that reminds me of a pit bull chasing a squirrel, our governor has revved up his desire to get a pipeline through the pinelands by replacing two Pinelands Commission members who voted against it with two new ones. One of whom should be known to Ocean City residents as the guy who managed the second of three candidates’ forums in our recent city election. Bob Barr distinguished himself by turning a scheduled debate into a fundraiser, into an open forum and finally into a non-event you might call a fiasco.

Barr’s feelings about the pipeline he keeps to himself. But since he’s a former aide to Jeff Van Drew, who strongly supports the pipeline and probably gave Barr’s name to Christie, and the fact that if Barr didn’t vote for the pipeline he’d be off the commission before the votes were tallied, I think it’s an easy guess as to how he will vote.

I used to be slightly in favor of the pipeline because of the gas-over-coal argument but the smell coming from this rigged vote has turned me into a skeptic.  Christie’s willingness to use political pawns to thwart the will of a very respectable commission makes me wonder if this deal helps the citizens of South Jersey or Christie’s political ambitions.
