Open mike night

Ocean City Repertory Theater, 813 Asbury Ave., presents an open mike night 7-9 p.m. every Thursday. Come to perform or just listen, relax and enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or refreshments. A sign-up sheet is at the door and performers are scheduled on a first-come, first-play basis. Admission is $5. This event is sponsored by the 7th Street Surf Shop. Call 457-6686.

 

Young adult games

AARP meeting

AARP Chapter 1062 of Ocean City will meet at noon Feb. 17. After a brief social time, the meeting will commence at 12:30 p.m. with speaker Winnie Pitano speaking on “Aging with Attitude.” The meeting will be held at Holy Trinity Church, 30th Street and Bay Avenue, Ocean City.

Free movies at the library

The Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th Street and Simpson Avenue, hosts a free Saturday afternoon movie 2 p.m. Feb. 18 with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (PG-13). Refreshments will be provided.

Pizza and a movie

The Italian Cultural Institute of South Jersey will meet 2 p.m. Feb. 19 at St. Frances Culliney Hall, Second Street and Atlantic Avenue, Ocean City. The program, pizza and a movie, will feature Johnny Stecchino. All are welcome. Call Marie Condo at 748-0619.

African-Americans and the Civil War

The Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave., presents author Joseph G. Bilby 1 p.m. Feb. 19 in room N110. The author presents a look at how African-American's from New Jersey enlisted to fight for the Union during the Civil War. Books available for purchase include: "Hidden History of New Jersey,” “Freedom to All,” “New Jersey Goes to War,” and “New Jersey's Civil War Odyssey.” Call 399-2434, ext. 5231.

Pancake supper

An all-you-can eat pancake supper will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21 at St. John Lutheran Chuch, 10th Street and Central Avenue in Ocean City. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and under. There will be pancakes, sausage, syrup, butter, coffee and juice. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the church office or at the door. Proceeds benefit St. John Lutheran Youth Organization for their trip to the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans, La. in July. For more information, call 399-0798 or see www.stjohnlutheranoc.org.

1st Ward meeting

Mayor Jay Gillian has announced that he will hold a community meeting in the 1st Ward 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the Bayside Center520 Bay Ave. The mayor will be joined by Ward Councilman John Kemenosh. The purpose of the meeting is to exchange information about current and upcoming city projects, plans and other issues, including issues of particular interest to this ward.

Black history in Cape May County

The Center for Community Arts presentation focuses on the first free African American settlements in Lower Township, moving on to West Cape May, Cape May and Whitesboro. The presentation will begin at noon Feb. 22 in room N110 at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th Street and Simpson Avenue. For more information, call 399-2434, ext. 5231.

The history of belly dance

University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology presents Habiba in “The History and Mystery of Belly Dance,” a program of lecture, performance and audience participation 1-2:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave. This general style of female solo interpretive dance is known and appreciated all over the Arab world including Northern Africa. Top dancers achieve the status of movie stars because of the prominence of the entertainment industry. Through discussion, slides and demonstration, Ms. Siegel, as Habiba, will trace the long history of this dance. Call 399-2434, ext. 5231 for information.

AARP driver safety classes

John Lynch, instructor for the AARP Driver Safety Program, will conduct classes Monday, Feb. 27 and Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Shores of Wesley Manor in Ocean City. The class is open to all citizens with a valid driver’s license.

Doc Gibbs drum program

The Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave., will host an interactive drum program for Black History Month featuring drummer Doc Gibbs. The program, for children ages 6-12, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in room N110.

‘Dream Girls’

Flower Show trip

The Ocean City Garden Club is sponsoring a bus trip to the Philadelphia International Flower Show on Wednesday, March 7 at a cost of $45. The bus will depart the 10th Street bus station at 1 p.m. sharp. The bus will leave the Flower Show for Ocean City at 7 p.m. sharp. The theme this year is Hawaii. Children’s craft workshop

The Ocean City Arts Center, 17th and Simpson Ave., is offering a Winter Wondercrafts Workshop for children ages 6-11 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, March 10. Instructor will be Kathy Hoffman. The cost is $10 plus $5 material fee per workshop. Pre-registration is required. Call 399-7628.

Book Surfers book club

The Book Surfers book club for fourth and fifth graders meets 2:30 p.m. Thursdays, March 15 and April 19 at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th Street and Simpson Avenue. Members get a free copy of each book and snacks. Call 399-2434, ext. 5241.
