Non-mechanized boat category added to parade
OCEAN CITY — The 59th annual Night in Venice will take place Saturday, July 20 with this year’s optional theme being “The Good Old Summer Time.”
This year, the city would like to start a new category for non-mechanized boats to include kayaks, gondolas, sailboats, etc. Anyone interested should contact the public relations office at 525-9300 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The starting time has not yet been announced.
The boat parade and decorated home celebration, organized by former public relations director Art Watkins and beach patrol Capt. Jack Jernee, was initiated to commemorate the city’s 75th anniversary in 1954.
Night In Venice has remained one of Ocean City’s most popular events.
Sue Canale, the longtime volunteer who directed Night In Venice and the Baby Parade for many years, and was active in other events, died in December and will be missed. The parade will be dedicated to her this year; her family will ride in one of the lead boats.
