Heart walk is May 17

Registration for the American Heart Association Heart Walk begins 9 a.m. May 17 at the Sports and Civic Center, Sixth Street and the boardwalk, and the walk starts 10:30 a.m.

Latin Jazz at Music Pier

Arturo O’Farrill Latin Jazz Big Band is set to perform 7 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Music Pier, boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.

The band’s “Song for Chico” won the Grammy for best Jazz Album of the Year in 2008 and the group has received many Grammy nominations, led by pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill.

Tickets are $20 for Somers Point Jazz Society members, $25 for non-members until May 15. Triathlon is May 18

 OCNJ Triathlon/Duathlon is May 18, with a quarter-mile pool swim, two mile run, 16 miles on a bike and another two mile run. There is also smaller a kid’s course. Pool Swim starts 6 a.m., Run/Bike/Run starts 9 a.m. $50 Tri/Du. $25 Kids course. For information, call

Treasure hunt this weekend

Join the Northeast's largest treasure hunting club on the beach to compete in a series of metal detecting hunts for prizes May 17 and 18, dubbed the Cinco en Mayo treasure hunt.

The event runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, according to organizers, members of the East Coast Research and Discovery Association, who describe it as a great family activity.

A special "Kids Hunt" is planned for Saturday. Adult assistance and loaner detectors will be available. Kids keep what they find and redeem tokens for larger prizes. All entrants can get additional information and sign up for the hunt at  www.ECRDA.org  or at the Music Pier on Saturday. Kids up to the age of 13 pay $5.

Walk against Lupus Sunday

Walk to End Lupus Now is set for the boardwalk Sunday, May 18. This 2k or 4k community walk helps raise money for Lupus research and educational programs while increasing awareness of Lupus, and seeks to gain public support for those living with it.

Plunge will include drip dry business attire

OCEAN CITY — The Business Persons’ Plunge in Ocean City unlocks the ocean for the season on May 23. Business persons, mascots, various groups march into the Ocean to the Ocean City High School’s rendition of Pomp and Circumstance.

Many plunge into the waves in full dress attire, others in their company’s uniforms. Ringmaster John Walton leads the contingents into the Ocean presenting the Stars and Stripes. All are welcome to participate or watch. The march starts at noon. Participants arrive by 11:30 a.m. It starts at the Moorlyn Terrace Beach by the Music Pier, the boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Free concert in front of Music Pier

The Bucks County Singers present a free concert in front of the Music Pier, boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, at 3:30 p.m. May 24, according to city officials. This ensemble, who have been performing in Ocean City for more than 25 years, will sing selections from The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, South Pacific, The King and I, patriotic selections plus standard and pop songs.

America tribute planned from Jersey Shore Pops

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE —  “America, Tribute to American Heroes,” by Linda Gentille and The Jersey Shore Pops Orchestra, featuring the music of Glenn Miller, John Phillip Sousa and George Gershwin, is planned 7 p.m. May 24 at The Ocean City Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and the boardwalk. 

 The concert will also feature a performance from the Youth Opera of South Jersey.

According to organizers, free tickets were offered in April to veterans and active duty service members.

The show will feature soloists including Clifford Buggs, who led the Cape May Coast Guard Band in Cape May for many years.

Spring Shorebird and Horseshoe Crab Festival is May 16-18

The Wetlands Institute and Delaware Shorebird Initiative will host the second annual Spring Shorebird and Horseshoe Crab Festival, a weekend of conservation-based, hands-on, interactive activities for all ages.

The festival celebrates the shorebird migration and horseshoe crab spawning season. According to the institute, the local shores host the largest concentration of spawning horseshoe crabs in their range, and the shorebird migration is one of the last great migrations on Earth.

Festival activities will begin Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. and continue on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A two-day ticket for a non-member adult is $15 and $10 for children. A two-day ticket for members is $13 for adults, $8 for children.

One-day tickets for non-members are $10 for adults, $8 for children, and $30 for a family four pack. Family four packs include two adult tickets and two children. One-day tickets for members are $8 for adults, $6 for children, and $25 for a family four pack.

Ocean City Pops Orchestra to celebrate 85th anniversary

OCEAN CITY — The Ocean City Pops Orchestra has announced a special concert starting 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Flanders Hotel, 719 East 11th St.

Tickets are $125, including wine, hors d'oeuvres, dinner, dessert, and parking.  

The concert will present the most popular tunes of each decade from 1929 through 2014 and will feature Richard Troxell and other young artists. The concert will be narrated by Daniel Pantano of the Academy of Vocal Arts and Concert Operetta Theater.
