Business Persons’ Plunge kicks off Ocean City’s summer Friday 

Free concert in front of Music Pier

The Bucks County Singers present a free concert in front of the Music Pier, boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, at 3:30 p.m. May 24, according to city officials. This ensemble, which has performed in Ocean City for more than 25 years, will sing selections from The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, South Pacific, The King and I, patriotic selections plus standard and pop songs.

America tribute planned from Jersey Shore Pops

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE —  “America, Tribute to American Heroes,” by Linda Gentille and The Jersey Shore Pops Orchestra, featuring the music of Glenn Miller, John Phillip Sousa and George Gershwin, is planned 7 p.m. Saturday, May 24 at The Ocean City Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and the boardwalk. 

The concert will also feature a performance from the Youth Opera of South Jersey.

According to organizers, free tickets were offered in April to veterans and active duty service members.

The show will feature soloists including Clifford Buggs, who led the Cape May Coast Guard Band in Cape May for many years.

 Art reception Saturday

Accent Gallery at 956 Asbury Ave. will host a reception with Robert Baum 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 24. The featured exhibit, Light and Shadow, will consist of original works in the style of contemporary realism. Ocean City Flower Show starts May 30

The 42nd Annual Flower Show, presented by the Ocean City Garden Club, will be held May 30 through June 1 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. The theme this year rhymes: “O’ For A Book and a Shady Nook.”

The book theme is incorporated into the Artistic Design Division, where categories will include colorful arrangements portraying Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Treasure Island, The Old Man and the Sea, the works of Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe and Murder on the Orient Express. The Junior Class, open to boys and girls 14 years of age and younger, features a Harry Potter theme.

There will also be a Horticultural Division with exhibits of roses, orchids, African violets, cactus, ferns, perennials, hanging plants, dish gardens, and more.

Flower show hours are 2 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 1. A trade show featuring flowers, plants and accessories for sale is held in the loggia area of the Music Pier during the weekend. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Barks on the Boards is June 1

Visitors and residents can take their dogs for a stroll on the boardwalk for Barks on the Boards Sunday June 1. The informal Pooch Parade, sponsored by the Ocean City Humane Society, includes a noon walk. Register 11:30 a.m. at the Sixth Street Practice Field next to the Sports and Civic Center. Cape Shore Chorale to present dance music

“Dance Extravaganza” by Cape Shore Chorale starts 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1 at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 30th Street and Bay Avenue. Under the direction of Scott Breiner, the chorale will perform choral music associated with dance from the 1920s to the 1970s. Guest soloists will be soprano Lexis Petrella, an Ocean City High School graduate and guitarist, Carlos Bedaya, an Egg Harbor Township High School graduate. There will be light refreshments. Ocean City Pops Orchestra to celebrate 85th anniversary

OCEAN CITY — The Ocean City Pops Orchestra has announced a special concert starting 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Flanders Hotel, 719 East 11th St.

Tickets are $125, including wine, hors d'oeuvres, dinner, dessert, and parking.  

The concert will present the most popular tunes of each decade from 1929 through 2014 and will feature Richard Troxell and other young artists. The concert will be narrated by Daniel Pantano of the Academy of Vocal Arts and Concert Operetta Theater.

Spring Open Horse Show June 8

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County 4-H Horse Council will hold its spring Open Horse Show Sunday, June 8, beginning at 8 a.m. at the County 4-H Fairgrounds on Courthouse-South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House.

The horse show will be a preview of some of the equine events taking place during the annual 4-H Fair on July 17, 18 and 19.

Horse show divisions include walk-trot, senior walk-trot, novice, walk-trot games, open games, hunter, junior open (for riders in fourth through 12th grades) and senior open (for those out of high school and older). Leadline and future 4-Her classes are offered for riders in third grade and under. Ribbons will be given in all classes with prizes for first place and division winners. All riders are required to wear a safety helmet.

The horse show entry fee is $35 per day or $10 per class if preregistered with payment by June 21 and $45 per day or $13 per class on the day of the show. Proceeds from the horse show will be used to fund 4-H equine educational activities.

The public is invited to attend this day of family fun and display of equestrian skill. A rain date of June 29 has been set in case of inclement weather.

Golf tournament for Children’s Fresh Air Home 

NORTH WILDWOOD—The Art West Memorial Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 13 at the Avalon Country Club and is hosted by Westy’s Irish Pub and the Children’s Fresh Air Home.

Art West was a friend and supporter of the CFAH for many years, organizers said. For seven years Westy’s Irish Pub sponsored the “Dickie Doo Golf Tournament” to benefit the organization. Now his family and the board of trustees for the Children’s Fresh Air Home will honor his legacy with the Art West Memorial Golf Outing. 

Sponsorships are available and foursomes welcome. The $150 entry fee includes greens fee and cart, gift bag, food and beverage on the course and the buffet dinner and open bar at Westy’s Irish Pub in North Wildwood following the tournament. Registration and lunch begin at noon with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Registration open for zoo camp

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Registration is now open for camp at the Cape May County Zoo this summer. The educational day camp for Pre-K through 8th grade students includes live animals, crafts, games and fun.

Morning and afternoon sessions are being offered and a variety of topics will be covered.  All classes run for one week, Monday through Friday.  Morning classes are from 9 a.m. to noon, and afternoon classes are from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost of zoo camp is $90 per week per participant and payment is due at time of registration.

Peter Nero performs in Cape May

CAPE MAY—For the third consecutive year, Peter Nero and the Philly POPS will perform Memorial Day Weekend Saturday May 24, at 8 p.m. in Cape May Convention Hall at 714 Beach Ave. 

Two-time Grammy Award-winning pianist Peter Nero is back at the helm for this 2014 Cape May concert, which is one of only two performances annually in which Peter leads the Philly POPS, and it is the only one in New Jersey, organizers said.
