OCHS Class of 2012 charged with making a difference

OCEAN CITY — Although rain threatened, and the wind didn’t let up, that couldn’t hamper the spirits of the 336 graduates of the class of 2012, as they prepared to receive their diplomas Wednesday, June 13.
On the Ocean City High School football field, with their parents, friends and family cheering them on, each student, the boys in Raider red, the girls in white, was called to the podium to be congratulated by Principal Matthew Jamison, Vice Principals Christine Lentz, Thomas Campo and Susan Palmer, district officials and members of the Board of Education.
This year’s speakers hoped to inspire the students, giving them life advice and recalling the hard work they had put in all four years at OCHS.
During the ceremony, the students were addressed by Lentz, Superintendent Kathleen Taylor and school board President Brenda Moiso.
Lentz also recognized the class of 1962, who graduated 50 years ago. A few members of the class were present for the ceremony and sat on the field with the students.
Kirsten Raab was selected to address her peers as graduation speaker.
“What happens at 211 degrees? Nothing,” she started. “What happens at 212 degrees? Water boils. It takes only one degree to make a difference: a difference that can alter the course of someone’s life or potentially change the world.”
Raab encouraged her classmates, and all those attended graduation, to make a difference.
“Today, we are gathered not only to celebrate our former accomplishments, but also to prepare for what lies ahead. Although this commencement signifies all of our achievements thus far, we must remember that our journey has just begun,” she said.
“Now that our future is becoming our present, we all have the opportunity to make that one-degree difference.
“We only have one life, and one opportunity to be remembered. It is my hope that when reflecting on our lives, we can all say that we have become people that we are proud of.”
Salutatorian Matthew Caulfield told his peers they have control of their future.
“There is a direct linearity between our choices and outcome, and we must embrace these choices with fervent commitment and enthusiasm. Without this conviction, we will never be happy with any decision we make, and without happiness, we will never achieve success,” he said.
Success, he said, is abstract and personal.
“Whatever it is, you should only pursue what you want to pursue. Because nothing else can demand the conviction it takes to achieve success,” Caulfield said. “It is no longer about choosing what song to sing along to in the car, or which fro-yo place to go to. It is about what you do and say; it is about the choices you make that will affect you and those around you. It is about finding your niche, finding things you actually want to do, to achieve, and developing the mature conviction to accomplish them.”
Valedictorian Sarah Ford charged her classmates to not simply be satisfied, but to strive for more.
“Yes, we should be proud of our accomplishments, but we should not shy away from accomplishing more,” she said. “Upon leaving here today, our new goal becomes combining the skills we have developed with the subjects we are passionate about.
“Whether we intend on pursuing a trade or education, or law or medicine, we must find our own role in bettering society. Instead of merely working to earn a living, we should work to benefit others.”
Ford said it is the duty of her classmates, as educated citizens, to make a contribution.
“For what is the point of acquiring so much knowledge if we are not going to use it in a constructive manner?” she asked. “I am not suggesting that we must always succeed, we will undoubtedly experience failure at some point. However, I am suggesting that we should all try.
“Congratulations to all of my fellow graduates and good luck in your future endeavors.”
As the ceremony came to an end, Class President Makeda Kerr led her classmates in the turning of the tassels, to signify that they were now graduates, and the tossing of the caps.
