Vietnam vet from Ocean City receives Bronze Star

MAYS LANDING — Retired US Army Sgt. James McElwee of Ocean City received a Bronze Star for meritorious service in the Vietnam War from US Rep. Frank LoBiondo during a ceremony Friday, March 7 at his office.

McElwee served in the 101st Airborne Infantry Division, 51st Infantry Regiment, Company F from Oct. 1, 1967 to July 30, 1968.

The award states that during his service, McElwee consistently manifested exemplary professionalism and initiative in obtaining outstanding results.

“His rapid assessment and solution of numerous problems inherent in a combat environment greatly enhanced the allied effectiveness against a determined and aggressive enemy,” the award states. “His loyalty, diligence and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.”

The award is dated Jan. 23, 2014.

In attendance were McElwee’s girlfriend Ann Washart, Brig. Gen. Michael Cunniff, adjutant general for New Jersey; and New Jersey State Command Chief Master Sgt. Vincent Morton.
