OCEAN CITY — Crews were removing asbestos siding from one of the two large Christian Brothers buildings at 31st Street and Central Avenue on Monday morning, April 21, the first step toward the eventual demolition of the building.

Wearing protective clothing and breathing masks, a team was carefully removing the asbestos siding from the building, while a foreman blocked off the area with tape. The sidewalk remained open.

According to a spokesman with the Christian Brothers, the first step in the demolition will include monitoring of air quality. After the asbestos is removed, the building will be torn down, while asbestos removal will begin at the other building on site.

Duplexes are planned for the beachfront land.

Last year, the Ocean City Planning Board approved a subdivision plan for four duplexes to be built on the property. Christian Brothers representatives said at the time that they could no longer afford the upkeep on the buildings.
