OCEAN CITY — To no one’s surprise, Martin Z. Mollusk saw his shadow on Thursday morning, May 1, predicting an early summer.

For the 40th year, the crab was joined by colorful characters to predict the start of the season. This year, that included the Ocean City High School band, some dancing fish presented by Ocean City girls, Dr. Frankenstein, a pirate and a llama. Ringleader Mark Soifer, Ocean City’s publicist, said he was certain that was the first time a llama stepped foot inside the Ocean City Music Pier, where the event was held due to thick fog and some rain.

The llama in question, from Bready Farms, seemed a little hesitant, lingering for some time in the doorway before joining the event.

Also featured were songs, mostly crab-based parodies of old standards, and presentations to several people in honor of the anniversary.

They included former Ocean City Commissioner Marilyn Moore, who was in office when Soifer first got the go-ahead for the event in 1974, back when it was held in March.

Also on Thursday, television anchorman Dick Sheeran spoke about his time covering Martin Z. Mollusk each year, and Soifer recognized Suzanne Muldowney, who introduced her Shelly the Mermaid character at a Martin Mullosk event 21 years ago.

Soifer also recognized OCHS band director Donna Schwartz with a key to Ocean City, and thanked the students in the band for their performance.
