OCEAN CITY — Police are investigating a grisly death near Ninth Street on the alley between Asbury and West avenues as a possible suicide, officials said today.

Witnesses say a man’s body was found at the site this morning, Tuesday, July 1.

“We believe it to be a suicide,” said Capt. Steve Ang. “That’s how it’s being investigated at this time.”

Ang said that it appeared the man may have jumped from one of the nearby buildings.

“There doesn’t seem to be anything of a suspicious nature,” the captain said.

Due to the nature of the death, police did not release his identity.

Erica Reis of Ocean City said she saw the area taped off this morning while heading to a local gym before work. She said the area was marked off with yellow crime scene tape, and that she saw a sheet-draped body being loaded into an ambulance. This was about 9:30 a.m., she said.

“There was blood everywhere. There was a sheet on the body, and the sheet was covered in blood,” she said. “You’re just not expecting to see that down here.”

Reis said she’s attending college in Philadelphia, but was shocked to see such a scene in the quiet shore resort.

“It was just heartbreaking,” she said.
