Ocean City’s Dick Grimes dies at 96

OCEAN CITY — Richard “Dick” Grimes of Ocean City died Saturday, Aug. 9 at the age of 96.

Grimes arrived in Ocean City from Pittsburgh in the third grade. He moved to Philadelphia in his sophomore year, graduating from Central High School. But he returned to Ocean City after serving in the Air Force during World War II. His wife, Marizita Miles Grimes, died in March of this year at the age of 97.

Grimes was an icon in the local sports scene, having the field at Sixth Street named for him in 2008. He was also very active in the community. Grimes was a former Ocean City Citizen of the Year and a founder of the Ocean City Youth Athletic Association.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 at the Ocean City Tabernacle at Sixth Street and Wesley Avenue. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m.
