Fugitive Absecon man indicted on vehicular homicide charges

MAYS LANDING _ An Absecon man was indicted May 7 on charges stemming from a 2011 accident in which he lied to police about his fatally injured girlfriend, who was left overnight in a nearby marsh as a result.

An AtlanticCounty grand jury indicted Victor Hernandez-Salgado, 30, for second-degree vehicular homicide, third-degree assault by auto and third-degree endangering an injured victim, said Atlantic County Acting Prosecutor Jim McClain.

Absecon Community Affairs Committee encourages residents to walk or bicycle around town

ABSECON - Members of the Absecon Community Affairs Committee have come up with an idea to help Absecon’s Green Team’s efforts to encourage area residents to reduce their carbon footprint while getting into better shape.

The committee, which is made up of prominent city residents, is sponsoring an “Absecon Chooses to Walk or Ride” initiative and a “Green Citizen” contest beginning this month.

Absecon   Police   Chief   David   Risley   prepares   a   monthly   activity   report   for   his   department.      For   April,   Chief   Risley   advised   that   his   25   officers   responded   to   2,486   calls   for   service,   making   a   total   of   9,943   calls   for   the   year   to   date.     

Through   careful   planning   and   staff   cooperation,   the   chief  has   been   able   to   reduce   overtime.      Overtime   has   been   reduced   by   243   hours   this   year   to   date.

Elco named grand marshal for parade honoring Absecon Fire Department’s 100 years of service

ABSECON _ There was little doubt over who to select as the grand marshal for Saturday’s parade honoring the Absecon Fire Department’s 100th anniversary.

Former Mayor Peter Elco was named parade grand marshal, according to Absecon Fire Chief Joe Smith.

PLEASANTVILLE _ Hurting residents and city officials on both sides of last month’s shooting tragedy shared their pain and concerns during an impromptu 30-minute session before Monday night’s City Council meeting.

A group of 70-plus residents, who said there are angry over the April 26 fatal police shooting of Alexis Perez, marched down First Avenue shouting “No justice! No Peace!” Then they filled City Council chambers to capacity to voice their concerns.
