TRENTON - New Jersey Department of Transportation officials announced last week that they will begin a series of Route 30 closures this week.

The closures are needed to complete the installation of safety barrier gates on the Route 30/Absecon Boulevard Bridge over Beach Thorofare in Atlantic City.

This week, NJDOT expects to close Route 30 in either direction between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. the following morning to install safety barrier gates on both sides of the movable bridge.

Between Oct. 10-19, NJDOT will close Route 30 in both directions between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily to test the gates.

These full closures will be limited to 15 minutes.

In spring 2012, NJDOT completed a $6 million project to repair the concrete deck, deck joints and sidewalks on the bridge.  That work also included updating mechanical and electrical systems to the bascule span bridge, reinforcing the retaining walls and painting.

The safety barrier gates installed during that project were damaged in late June heavy storm. They are now being replaced.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website http://www.511nj.org  for real-time travel information.
