ABSECON - Area children with physical and developmental disabilities will be able to enjoy a playground built just for them beginning tomorrow.
The playground will be built Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Field of Dreams located in Dr. Jonathan Pitney Park, 1000 Morton Ave., Absecon.
The playground is being built by AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership and PerformCare.
The South Jersey Field of Dreams donated $15,000 to the AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership to support the build.
“We are pleased to support this very important project,” said Barry Hackett, a South Jersey Field of Dreams co-founder. “The Partnership’s dedication to empowering communities and encouraging healthy lifestyles is directly in line with our mission and commitment to the region.”
The park will include wheelchair-compatible synthetic surfaces, accessible routes to join ground level and elevated play structures and handicapped-accessible parking.
As a result, the new playground will give children, regardless of ability or disability, the chance to enjoy playground fun.
“This new playground is a long-awaited development that has the potential to change the lives of these children,” said Maria Battle, president of the AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership. “It is not just a recreational facility; it is a gateway for these children to share positive, constructive interaction with each other in a safe and fun setting.”
Although the Field of Dreams playground is not the first of its type, much work remains to ensure that these children have access to safe places to play, Kathleen Enerlich, executive director of PerformCare in New Jersey, said.
“The construction of the playground is a project that enables greater inclusion for children who are sometimes marginalized,” she said. “Accessible playgrounds are not just beneficial to children living with physical and developmental disabilities; it gives other children greater awareness of their peers with special needs.”
The AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership was established in 2011 as a non-profit charity dedicated to implementing health initiatives that foster disease prevention and that improve the quality of life for individuals, families, neighborhoods and communities.
