ABSECON - An army of volunteers from across the Tri-State area invaded the small empty field next to the South Jersey Field of Dreams on Saturday, Sept. 28 so that all children would have a place to play and share good times.
A few hours later, children of all abilities were able to ride or walk up a catwalk, climb up a ladder or slide down a slide, thanks to the efforts of scores of volunteers.
“It’s pretty amazing,” said Autumn J. Staats, a spokesperson for AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership, one of the events sponsors. “It goes up quickly when you have so many volunteers in place, but it really takes a year of planning.
AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership and PerformCare organized the build.
The South Jersey Field of Dreams donated $15,000 toward the equipment.
The playground includes modifications such as wheelchair-compatible synthetic surfaces, accessible routes that connect ground level and elevated play structures and handicapped-accessible parking.
All children, regardless of their ability, will be able to use the playground.
The volunteers included AmeriHealth workers and Rowan University students.
The playground is located to the left of the South Jersey Field of Dreams in PitneyPark off or Morton Avenue in Absecon.
