ABSECON - The nation’s first state may not be the first place to escape to, a suspected Absecon bank robber found out Wednesday, Dec. 11. Delaware State Police arrested an Atlantic City man who was wanted in an Absecon bank armed robbery about two hours after the crime occurred.

Police said they stopped the man's car after they clocked him driving at a high rate of speed on I-295.

Ernest Womack, 27, was arrested and charged with several offenses including robbery, assault and weapons offenses, Absecon police said.

Womack’s bail was set at $400,000 full cash for just the Absecon charges.

Early-morning robbery

Absecon police said a man matching Womack’s description barged his way into the city’s TD Bank as the branch’s assistant manager was opening for the day.

He ran across the bank lobby and jumped across the tellers’ counter, police said, and then pointed the handgun at a female teller and demanded money from her till.

The man received an undisclosed amount of money along with a hidden dye pack and escaped in a silver Hyundai with Virginia license plate WWD 9943.

He was described as a heavy-set black male with a moustache who was wearing a black knitted cap, hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and sneakers, police said.

High-speed getaway

A short time later, New Jersey State troopers from the Atlantic City Expressway Barracks began receiving calls reporting a silver Hyundai sedan with Virginia license plate WWD 9943 traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on the Expressway toward Philadelphia.

The callers said the driver was throwing items from his vehicle.

Troopers found several miles of the Atlantic City Expressway littered with dye-stained money and clothing.

The accused's vehicle was briefly located by troopers before it fled at a high rate of speed.

Soon thereafter, Delaware State Troopers located the Hyundai traveling on Route 295 in Delaware. They stopped the car and arrested the driver.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Absecon police at 609-641-0667.
