ABSECON –  A Newtonville man faces DWI charges after he crashed his car on the east-bound end of Delilah Road and forced the closure of the highway for more than eight hours on Saturday, June 28.

Byron L. White, 32, of Newtonville refused medical treatment at the scene, according to a press release prepared by Absecon Police Sgt. Robert Ponzetti.

White was arrested and charged with DWI and with having an outstanding traffic warrant out of EggHarborTownship, Ponzetti said.

White was jailed at the Atlantic County Justice Facility on the traffic warrant, Ponzetti said.

White lost control of his Toyota Avalon while driving east and attempting to negotiate the Delilah Road onramp that leads to the White Horse Pike, Ponzetti said.

The car struck an Atlantic City Electric pole and knocked it down across the highway.

Delilah Road was shut down for eight hours to allow Atlantic City Electric crews to remove the broken pole and replace it with a new one.

Members of the Pleasantville Police Department assisted Absecon officers with traffic control until the pole was replaced.

Police reopened the highway around 11 a.m. that morning.

Absecon Ptl. Andrew Southrey is investigating the accident.
