PLEASANTVILLE – City officials are planning a life celebration for former Mayor Ralph Peterson Sr. and are asking residents, city and Atlantic County area dignitaries to appear and say a few words about his life, career and impact on them.

The Memorial Celebration of Life for Ralph Peterson Sr. will be held 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at Mount Zion Church, 353 S. New Road, Pleasantville.

During a five-decade-long civic career, Peterson served as a police officer and later went on to become Pleasantville’s first African-American police chief and mayor.

During his four-terms as mayor, the city revamped its downtown, maintained a role model Urban Enterprize Zone, launched the New Hope Community project, and laid the groundwork for the long-awaited Center City Redevelopment Zone.

Peterson’s life celebration will feature music and other performances in honor of his many years of service to the Pleasantville.

The celebration will also give community members and local dignitaries an opportunity to publicly share their experience, memories and gratitude for what Peterson did for them personally or for the city.

Organizers are limiting comments to 5 minutes so they may provide a nice mixture of music, dance, spoken word and other demonstrations and proclamation readings.
