Northfield wins 9-10 District 16 baseball title

Northfield youngsters of all ages (and both genders) are playing solid, fundamentally sound ball this summer. The 9- and 10-year-old baseball variety were rewarded with a District 16 championship on Tuesday, July 2.

Northfield beat Somers Point, 15-0, in Dennisville in a game shortened to four innings by the 10-run rule. Cole Campbell and Ben Bradt combined to strike out 10 in the shutout. Tyler Allen went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Anthony Medina also had three runs batted in.

Matt Kwapinski and Joey Hoopes each had two RBIs for Northfield.

With the win, Northfield moves on to the Section 4 tournament next week. The Section 4 tournament is a six-team, double-elimination tournament that will take place in East Greenwich, Cumberland County.

northfield Bill LeConey/Northfield’s Cole Campbell winds up to throw a pitch. Northfield’s opening game in that tourney is Monday, July 8, at 6 p.m. against the District 3 champion, which has yet to be determined.

Coach Jim Travagline said the Northfield 9-10 team last won the District 16 title two years ago when it reached the state tournament. Last year the team made it to the District finals but lost.

The 9-10 championship followed closely on the heels of the Northfield Little League Softball team’s District 16 title. That team is currently playing in the Section 4 softball tournament in Cherry Hill.

The Little League baseball (11-12) team is also in the hunt for a District 16 title but will have to win three straight after losing to Ocean City, 4-3, on Tuesday.
